Here nor There began as a series of portraits of friends whose closest living relatives were thousands of miles away. It was while I was working on this project that my father died, in the fall of 1998. Through the final weeks of his life an oxygen machine helped to sustain him, and the machine’s rhythmic, hypnotic, beautiful drone had an unexpectedly calming effect, as peaceful as it was ominous. The sound at the center of Here nor There is derived from a recording I made of my father’s oxygen machine.
In 1999 Here nor There was exhibited in the lard cooler of the pre-renovation Tip Top building in White River Junction, Vermont.
